Murdoch's resignation: Why now? What's changing?

Employees at every level were taken aback on Thursday when corporate communications hurled a grenade into the news cycle announcing that controlling shareholder Rupert Murdoch is “stepping down” from his directorships at Fox and News Corp. 

That a 92-year-old is shifting gears shouldn’t be so surprising, but I had thought Rupert would be on the job to the bitter end. Why is this news happening now?
